Convention on NREGA (Ranchi, 7-9 November 2008)

A three-day convention on NREGA will be held in Namkum Bagicha (near Ranchi) on 7-9 November, 2008. The aim of this convention is to review the status of NREGA in Jharkhand and plan future activities.

This event is a joint effort of many local organizations working on NREGA in Jharkhand. Members of these organizations met in Ranchi on 10 September and decided to call this convention.

Recent events in Jharkhand, including a spate of murders and suicides related to NREGA, highlight the need for a strong people's movement for the right to work. Among the main issues to be discussed at the convention are:
(1) demand for work and participatory planning;
(2) wage-related issues;
(3) social audits;
(4) struggles for the unemployment allowance;
(5) formation of NREGA unions.

Activists from all over Jharkhand, and also some other states, are expected to participate in this convention. The next preparatory meeting for this convention will be held in Ranchi on 13 October.
